Frequently asked Questions

What software technologies does MGN use?
MGN uses a client server technology. The client being a JavaScript application that runs in a sandboxed environment in your Internet browser on your pc/laptop.

Sandboxed means that the client application has absolutely no access to any data or any applications on your pc/laptop. The only exceptions to this rule are if you attach a file on your pc/laptop to a Message to send to someone in your Network, or if you download a file that you received in a Message from one of your Network Contacts. These are both deliberate actions on your part. See the FAQ (Frequently asked Questions) topics further down this page, explaining the key concepts of MGN Messages and MGN Network Contacts.

MGN is unlike software that you have installed on your pc/laptop, whereby you have to trust the company that developed the software, and that their software will not access any personal and private information stored on your pc/laptop, and potentially send any collected data to their own, or 3rd party servers. This has become more of a threat as companies gather and sell data to AI companies. Another problem that can occur with locally installed software is that is has not been maintained, or badly engineered, and has security vulnerabilities which put your personal and business data at risk.

The client software in your browser communicates with our servers using a secure encrypted data tunnel.

Orion Software uses a Continuous Improvement strategy in its development process.

Changes to the client and server side code are triggered by:

  1. The new feature rollout plan master list.
  2. Requests and suggestions from the MGN community. Each of these must make sense for the community as a whole before they are added to the new feature rollout plan. These feature requests and suggestions should be logged on the MGN Help Desk. Every request and suggestion is responded to timeously.
  3. Continuous code quality and maintainability reviews.
  4. Continuous monitoring of server side operations. Every operation is completely anonymous and your MGN data is not visible or stored in our log files. The length of time that the server software took to execute and return a response to the client software is monitored. This highlights the need for potential improvements to the server side code and/or database structures.

Potentially in the future, all software will use the same technologies as MGN, and operating systems on pc's/laptops will consist of mainly an Internet browser.

What type of user interface does the MGN client software have?
The MGN client application is presented as an MDI (multiple document interface) solution in your pc/laptop Web browser. MDI means that multiple windows can be open at the same time, and you change between the windows effortlessly with a single click on the relevant menu option buttons. The menu option buttons are always visible.

MDI applications are much harder to develop than SDI (single document interface) applications, but they enable a much more productive environment.

User productivity is an important design and feature goal for MGN, and we will continue adding functionality on that theme.

As well as being able to use your mouse to move from one data entry field to another, the quicker method is actually to use the tab button on your keyboard to move to the next available field/button and the reverse tab on your keyboard to move to the previous available field/button.

Pressing the enter button on your keyboard while a button is focused, is the same as clicking on the button with your mouse.

Most MGN users will keep the application running on their pc/laptop during their work/play day, as they view and if necessary respond to incoming Messages. Messages you receive are spam free, and from people in your Network, so quicker action might be more desirable, than you are used to, when replying to, or reading email messages in your mail client inbox. See the relevant FAQ topics further down on this pages about Messages and Network Contacts.

MGN users will also spend some time each day growing their Network, see the relevant FAQ topic further down on this page.

Who should be using MGN?
Do you want to:

  • Market your goods/services and/or
  • Search for good/services that you need and/or
  • Market your skills and/or
  • Search for people whose skills you need and/or
  • Search for people who share your personal interests and/or hobbies
  • Allow people that share your personal interests and/or hobbies to find you

Then MGN is the ideal solution for you.

Once members of the MGN community are part of your Network, you communicate with them reliably and securely and privately, via the Messages options within MGN. The Messages may be single Messages that you send, or mass Messages via the Campaign option. See the relevant FAQ's further down this page.

I am what they refer to as technically challenged! MGN looks like it would be of benefit to me, but will I be able to cope with using the application productively?
You really should not have a problem. As mentioned, MGN was designed from the ground up to be easy to use, and as we continue to implement new functionality, that goal will always remain uppermost in our minds. There is also a Help system built into the application, which includes a getting started guide.

At any time, you are also very welcome to post any questions, or suggestions, you may have on the MGN Help Desk.

I cannot find phone numbers or email addresses to contact the support staff about my MGN query?
MGN makes use of a sophisticated Help Desk system. MGN queries or suggestions should be posted there.

This ensures that every query is recorded and replied to on a timeous basis.

So no emails to a support email address getting lost, and you waiting eternally for a response, and wondering if the email you used is still in use and being monitored, or if your email was actually delivered at all.

Or the dreaded phone message to a call center "We are experiencing a high volume of calls. You are number 347 in the queue, please hold, your call is important to us".

What are MGN Messages?
MGN includes a powerful built in Message system for communicating with your Network Contacts (see the next FAQ topic). Similar to traditional email, Messages can be sent, replied to, or forwarded. Messages can include embedded images and have file attachments.

You can, and should, organize your read Messages into Message folders, also a part of MGN.

There is also a built-in powerful Campaign system. You can send a personalised Message to all the Network Contacts within a contact category, also a part of MGN. The Campaign Message is based upon a Message template which you create, the Message template includes placeholder functionality so that each Message that gets sent can be personalised.

Please log a query on the MGN Help Desk if you currently do email marketing and would like to import your existing contact database into MGN.

Delivery of every Message you send is guaranteed.

Are MGN Messages a complete replacement for traditional email?
No.

MGN Messages are far better than traditional email, but you will still need mail client software for communicating with people and institutions that are not part of your MGN Network.

You should however, encourage people who rely on your message interactions and people whose message interactions you rely on, to join MGN.

Traditional email has become very unreliable and unsafe and rife with spam and phishing attempts, as every mail user experiences on a daily basis.

Phishing emails are getting more and more sophisticated by the day as rogue operators employ AI engines to deliver highly targeted emails on a massive scale.

Email service providers are fighting a never ending uphill battle to allow legitimate mail to be delivered while blocking those spam and phishing attacks.

Unfortunately as email service providers fight this onslaught, the rules and systems they have to tweak on their mail servers, can result in valid emails not getting delivered.

Unfortunately as well, it is unlikely that you will receive a notification that your legitimate email has not been delivered. The mail service provider will not want to let rogue operators know that their emails have not been delivered, if they did so, the rogue operator would make a slight adjustment to the email format and try again.

MGN guarantees that every Message you send will get delivered, every time.

What are MGN Network Contacts?
Network Contacts are members of the MGN community that are part of your Network. They are the people that you can send Messages to and receive Messages from.

Why is the term MGN Community used so often?
MGN provides a safe and secure enclosed environment.

Only your Network Contacts can send Messages to you. If you receive a Message containing content that you find offensive, you can immediately disconnect the sender from your Network, and they will never be able to communicate with you again via MGN.

You should never share your email address, or anyone else's email address, with any of your MGN Network Contacts. People that you invite to join MGN, are of course people that you know and will already have your email address.

If you believe that content in a Message that you receive is against the MGN Terms of Use (available from the link at the bottom of this page), please log the details on the MGN Help Desk, and appropriate action will be taken

MGN aims at fostering a sense of community, badly lacking in the world today.

What are MGN Profiles?
MGN Profiles consist of different Network interest segments, and you decide which of the segments to activate, depending on your goals for using MGN. Each segment consists of some text, which can also include images, and a data entry field where you enter some appropriate search terms. When members of the MGN community are looking for people to join and grow their Network, they enter search terms to find people who match what they are looking for.

For example, if you are looking to hire a new JavaScript Angular software developer you would enable the "Offering employment" Network interest segment. You would also enter some details and requirements for the placement. And you might enter search terms such as "JavaScript" and "Angular" into the search term data entry field. MGN would then index that data, and members of the MGN community typing in either of those search terms would see your Profile listed in the search results. Double clicking on that row in the search results will show your Network Profile, which includes the "Offering employment" Network interest that you set up.

MGN is not just for business purposes, there is also a Network interest segment for "Hobbies and interests". For example, someone interested in coin collecting who wants to communicate with likeminded individuals would add some details in the "Hobbies and interests" Network interest, add search terms such as "coin collecting" and "Numismatics", and then activate that Network interest.

How do I grow my MGN Network?
There are 3 ways of growing your Network:

  1. By inviting people to join MGN via the built in Grow my Network via email invitation system. People that you invite and join, will automatically be part of your Network. You will also earn 5 MGN Credits for each successful signup. See the next FAQ for information about MGN Credits.
  2. Use the built in MGN search engine to look for members of the MGN community that will add value to your Network. Once you have identified relevant people, you can ask them to join your Network. The request will cost you a single MGN Credit. They will see your Network request within MGN, and will either approve or deny the request. They will probably have a look at your Network Profile before making this decision.
  3. Members of the MGN community will do a search using the built in MGN search engine, and if your Network Profile resonates with them, they will ask to join your Network. You will see their Network request within MGN, and you will make a decision to approve or deny their Network request. You will probably have a look at their Network Profile before making this decision.

What are MGN credits?
Each Message that you send costs 1 MGN credit, and each Network request that you send also costs 1 MGN credit. Each time you invite someone to join the MGN community, and they do indeed join, immediately earns you 5 MGN credits. Helping to grow  the MGN community will also help you to have a higher ranking in the MGN engine search results.

If you run out of MGN credits, you can top-up by buying low cost MGN credits via a credit card payment through a PayPal payment gateway system. MGN does not store your credit card details in the database.

Can I forward an MGN email invitation sent to me, to someone else to use?
No, each email invitation is personalised and only you can make use of that invitation. As a member of the MGN community you will use the Grow my Network via email menu option to send your own email invitation to that person. Once that person joins MGN, they also immediately become part of your Network, and you earn 5 MGN Credits.

What are the Messages from MGN Admin?
MGN Admin is the special Network Contact that MGN system Messages are sent from. MGN Admin sends out Messages about scheduled downtime for operating system updates, any downtime for other software updates, information about new MGN features, reminders and generally anything that members of the MGN community should be aware of.

Is my data secure and private?
Yes!

Your data is stored securely in a high end database.

You decide what information you want to make available to members of the MGN community, via your MGN Profile. The data  in your MGN Profile is not available to anyone or anything outside of the MGN community.

If you need to log a query on the MGN Help Desk regarding content in a Message that you consider is against the MGN Terms of Use, available via the link at the bottom of this page, you need to log the unique Message ID of that Message as well, and also give express permission for the Orion Software support staff to view that Message.  The unique Message ID is available to copy and paste, into the Help Desk query, when viewing a Message. The Orion Software staff have no other access to any Messages in MGN, other than when viewing a reported Message using the Message ID you have given them, or of course any MGN Message that they have received, being members of the MGN community themselves.

If you leave the MGN community, your MGN Profile will immediately no longer be visible to anyone within the MGN community. Your MGN Profile data will remain in the database for 30 days, in case there has been mistake, and then your MGN Profile data will automatically be permanently deleted.
